IIT Madras introduces changes in HSEE pattern
IIT Madras offers a unique integrated five-year Master’s programme in development studies, economics and English studies. The IIT has introduced some changes in the pattern of the Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Test (HSEE) for admissions to the programme. It has introduced an essay component as a part of the exam. Thus, in addition to the 150 objective type questions on English, maths, general knowledge and analytical reasoning for two and a half hours, half -an-hour has been set aside for essay writing, explains Hema Raman of Sriram Academy, Kochi. A systematic preparation based on the syllabus coupled with a thorough knowledge of current affairs would help the students crack the entrance test with ease, she says, adding that students could pay attention to the following points while preparing themselves for it.

English

Typically students can expect a standard comprehension passage with questions based on it. Further, synonyms, antonyms, idioms and phrases can also be expected. Students should work extensively on grammar and vocabulary, for which they could rely upon Wren and Martin and books like ‘Word Power Made Easy,’ and so on.

Analytical reasoning

Questions based on puzzles, number analogy and general reasoning can be expected. Working out verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions in standard text-books would help students gain confidence.

Arithmetic ability

Students are expected to have a reasonable knowledge of basic arithmetic and statistics concepts. They can expect at least 25 standard problems on arithmetic ability. Loads of practice on mathematical areas such as ratio and proportion; averages; probability; basic trigonometry; and time and distance would stand the aspirants in good stead.

GK

This is the diciest section in the entrance exam as anything under the sun could be asked and students have to put in thorough preparation. Though IIT has indicated the syllabus for GK for the HSEE examination, questions from other related areas could also be asked. This makes it essential for students to brace themselves with general GK as well. A thorough reading of a good yearbook, magazines that focus on competitive tests, NCERT textbooks and standard newspapers is recommended.

Essay

Students can expect topics of general interest. Preparing on a wide range of current ‘hot’ topics and practising writing everyday will help students to come up with a good essay.
